Hiking in the Baybach Valley
Wildly romantic and untamed, the Baybach Valley meanders 27 km from Hausbay in the Hunsrück down to Burgen on the Mosel. Beginning at Schloß Reifenthal (located on B-327, shortly after Emmelshausen in the direction of Kastellaun), you are initially confronted with wide paths along your hiking trail, which gradually narrow as you proceed through cliffed walls bordering the Baybach Valley.
Progressing further, you'll sometimes encounter very narrow trails through unspoiled nature, occasionally passing by the walled ruins of old mills, ancient charburner spots and one-time slate mines. The trail may turn into an adventurous climbing tour now and then as you are confronted by steep passes between and over steep cliffed walls. Cables strung at these locations provide support and safe footing. Good conditions and suitable footgear are indispensable along these routes . The Schmausemühle invites you to take a well-earned rest at the halfway mark (13 km; 3 to 4 hour hike)...
