An excursion into the Rhine Valley
„Towers glisten in the sunlight with the forests rustling green, the birdsong sounds, erupting wildly from within.“ In his ballad „Auf dem Rhein“, this is how Clemens Brentano describes the landscape through which the 1320 km long river flows.
Nowhere in the world is the concentration of fortresses and castles greater than here. There are 21 just between the cities of Koblenz and Bingen alone. Nonetheless, there are only two castles that remain intact to this day: the "Pfalzgrafenstein" in the Rhine River by Kaub and the "Marksburg" by Braubach. The latter village, located near the town of Lahnstein, continues to inspire many travellers with its picturesque half-timbered houses and narrow alleyways.
The highly esteemed Rhine Valley wines were brought into the region by the Romans. Typical grapes for this growing area are, among others, the Riesling, the Silvaner and the Pinot Gris.
